Reconnecting with Nature: My Retreat in the Sutherland Hills

Updated: Mar 25

A Healer in the Wild

I came away for a short break in the wild Sutherland Hills to reconnect with nature. This has always been my escape. Although I’m still suffering the effects of chronic Lyme disease, which ironically stemmed from my love of the outdoors, I will never stop appreciating and needing to be surrounded by the calm that nature brings.

Sutherland is only 80 miles from home. However, it feels like a world of difference in topography and landscape. The rugged hills here stand in stark contrast to where I live. Yet, they still offer that same quiet, rejuvenating energy that makes being in nature so special.

The Transformation of Spring

At this time of year, winter retreats, and the early signs of spring begin to stir. The landscape undergoes a gentle transformation. The once-bare trees are starting to bud. Meanwhile, the woodland floor is covered with the soft emerald moss that I love. The air feels fresh and crisp, carrying the scents of earth and pine.

The Beauty of Woodland Walks

Walking through the wild, untamed woodlands is invigorating. Surrounded by towering trees and rugged hills, I feel a deep sense of peace and well-being. Nature here is pure, unspoiled, and full of life. The stillness of the forest allows you to reconnect with the present moment. Every step along the winding paths feels like a grounding experience.

The birds are starting to return in full force. Early spring is one of the best times to spot and hear them as they begin their breeding season. The male Song Thrush is particularly vocal with his beautiful, repetitive melody to attract a mate. Calls of grouse echo through the heather while golden eagles soar high above.

I have enjoyed watching the cheeky red squirrels feed on the nuts right outside the cottage window—such a joyful sight. Then, there’s also the red deer grazing quietly in the distant hills, adding to the calm permeating the area.

Embracing the Change of Seasons

As the days gradually get longer and the sun rises higher in the sky, the landscape is bathed in soft light. This casts long shadows and creates a timeless beauty around me. There is a profound sense of connection to the land here, making every moment feel sacred.

In these wild Sutherland Hills, nature works its magic. It offers a perfect escape from the noise of everyday life and a chance to rejuvenate both body and soul.

Inspiration from Nature

Being in these stunning surroundings has also inspired our upcoming wax melt fragrance, Heather & Hibiscus. This new fragrance combines striking red Hibiscus with Jasmine Sambac and a touch of soft Vanilla. I'd describe it as a Highland bloom with a tropical twist! Keep an eye out for our email updates, as we'll let you know when we launch this new scent.

The Ancient Croick Church

It’s time to sign off now, as I only have a day left of my retreat here in these beautiful Sutherland Hills. On my list today is a visit to the ancient Croick Church on the Estate. This small 19th-century church is notable for its connection to the Highland Clearances.

The roof of the church served as shelter for displaced crofters who were forced from their land. Some of these crofters etched their names and messages into the windows of the church, a sad reminder of their suffering. The church sits in a serene, remote location, and I look forward to visiting before I return home.

Final Thoughts

I hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into my time away. Nature has a special way of bringing tranquility into our lives. Until next time, take care. I hope the fragrances of our Made In The Hills candles and wax melts bring a touch of nature's tranquility into your home. May they help you find your own moments of peace!
